Durga, also known as Shakti or Devi, is the protective mother of the universe.Goddess Durga represents the power of the Supreme Being that preserves moral order and righteousness in the universe.  The goddess of power and strength,she is the destroyer of evil. Durga is the inherent dynamic energy through which this supreme consciousness manifests itself.
The goddess Durga is also referred to as Triyambake (the three-eyed goddess).The (chakshudan) left eye represents desire, symbolized by the moon; her right eye represents action, symbolized by the sun; and her middle eye stands for knowledge, symbolized by fire. Durga can be conceived as the supreme power. The word ‘Durga’ means invincible. She is the embodiement of purity, knowledge, truth and self-realization. Goddess Durga keeps up the play of the divine universal God through the three attributes of Nature, namely, Satva (equilibrium and serenity), Rajas (dynamism and kinesis) and Tamas (ignorance and inertia). Knowledge, peace, lust, anger, greed, egoism and pride, all are Her forms. Devi Durga is considered as the feminine epitome of strength.
In the artwork displayed here, one sees Durga with her bejeweled crown, adorned with rubies, emeralds and diamonds. The crown is symbolic of her being the one who overlooks the cosmo. If one looks closely it seems Maa Durga’s eyes are looking at you. Her face appears to be calm and serene.The yellow colour reminds us that the Goddess is identified as haldi-mukhi or turmeric-faced. This makes her radiant as the sun. It connects her with gold, with the harvest, with lions, and all things mangala.
